Why Is Angola Still Waiting for Postal Codes? World Post Day on 9 October

We observed the World Post Day

9 October 2026 | Connecting generations, building inclusive cities and demanding action

The United Nations marks World Post Day on 9 October under the 2026 theme, “One postal network, infinite possibilities.” This year's theme celebrates the power of postal networks to connect people, expand economic opportunities and improve access to essential services in an increasingly digital world.

Angola has no official postal code system because the country has not yet fully implemented a national system of postcodes for identifying streets, neighbourhoods and delivery areas. This is mainly an issue of postal infrastructure, address standardisation and the modernisation of mail delivery, rather than a lack of postal services.

Why doesn't Angola have postal codes?

          1. Limited modernisation of the postal system

Angola has a national postal operator, Correios de Angola, but its traditional addressing system relies on locations, streets, municipalities and post office boxes instead of a standard national postcode.

 2. Challenges with street addresses
In some areas, street names, house numbers and formal addresses are inconsistent or difficult to identify. A postcode system works best when locations are properly mapped and addresses are standardised.

 3. A system that has been planned but not fully implemented

Angola has previously outlined plans to introduce postal codes, initially in Luanda and subsequently throughout the country. However, the available references still identify Angola as a country without an official national postcode system.

 What are the consequences?

The absence of postcodes can make it harder to:

- Deliver letters and parcels accurately to homes and businesses.

- Register addresses on international websites and online shopping platforms.

- Verify residential addresses for banking, online services and official registrations.

- Automate mail sorting and improve logistics.

What should you enter when a website asks for a postal code in Angola?

There is no official Angolan postal code for Luanda, Cazenga, Viana, or other locations in the country.

If the website allows… What to do

An empty postal code field -  Leave it blank.

Letters  - Try N/A, if accepted.

Only five digits -  Try 00000 if the website accepts it.

This is a workaround, not an official code. For deliveries, provide your full address, municipality, province, a recognisable landmark and a telephone number.

Could Angola introduce postal codes in the future?

Yes. Angola has already had plans for a national postal addressing system. Introducing and implementing it nationwide could improve delivery services, e-commerce, logistics and the verification of addresses. The challenge is ensuring that the system is officially established, mapped, communicated to the public and adopted by postal operators.

Conclusion: Angola does not lack postal services; it lacks a fully implemented, standardised national postal code system. This is an important infrastructure gap in an increasingly digital economy.
